peace park and community garden - groundbuilding

Rather than a groundbreaking, this is a "groundbuilding." Americorps volunteer Benjamin Legrand is the driving force behind this joyous celebration of life and growth in Central City. Saturday November 2nd, St. John the Baptist Community Center, the Oretha Castle Haley Community and our elected officials came together to build a new 5700 square-foot community garden and peace park on the corner of Oretha Castle Haley and Clio Street. This 'groundbuilding' is the start of a yearlong project to develop a self-sufficient community garden and peace park in the Central City neighbourhood.

The goals of the garden and peace park are:
* to improve the Central City neighborhood
* to build unity through collaboration with business and community groups
* to have youth, adults and seniors work together to build a stronger community and to further foster community ownership
* to build self-esteem and instill a sense of pride in community members with this beautiful, peaceful space
* to create an outdoor classroom, educating people about the environment, gardening/horticulture, healthy living, and other life skills.
